We define a mentor as someone who will hold your hand for as long as you need, on this new terrain you are moving to. Whether it is finding your way into the first job out of uniform, understanding workplace nuances and signals in the initial months to navigate right and easy, or while you target a subsequent career pivot to pursue your career dreams, having a mentor takes away the need to reinvent the wheel, and to learn without oneself making all the mistakes that can be avoided
As you get to this crucial juncture in your professional (and personal) lives, we want you to recognize that a mentor is not just someone who is willing to support you. Equally vital is that the mentor has walked the talk, and succeeded, in what they advise you to do. Just as watching Dhoni bat does not make you a good cricketer, leave alone Captain, ‘been there done that’ is something to watch out for, lest you end up at the wrong destinations, heeding advice from well meaning mentors, but without the needed depth and capability to advise.
We see a lot of veterans who chose to be “consultants” or “life coaches” as an easy career option, without doing stuff at scale themselves with any success; we all know that churning out ‘gyan’ comes easy and is a favoured past-time. So, check what “transition mentorship” providers have accomplished, that qualifies them, and steer clear of theoretical geniuses.
This is a prime reason we, as veterans now in CXO roles, decided on this mission to guide right, and equally, expose ‘unqualified mentors’ making money or fame from veterans.
